Capped Bust Quarter Value Guide

Minted from 1815-1838

The Capped Bust Quarter was produced from 1815 to 1838, featuring a design by John Reich similar to the Capped Bust Dime. The obverse showcases Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, and the reverse bears a bald eagle with a shield on its chest, clutching arrows and an olive branch. The Capped Bust Quarter is appreciated for its detailed design and historical importance.

During its mintage, the Capped Bust Quarter underwent a design modification in 1831, transitioning from a large diameter to a reduced diameter format. This change resulted in two distinct subtypes for collectors to pursue: the large diameter and the reduced diameter coins.

The large diameter coins are scarcer and more valuable, particularly the 1823/2 overdate issue. The Capped Bust Quarter series offers collectors an opportunity to assemble a complete set of dates and mint marks, although some issues, like the 1827 and the 1838-O, are considered rare and highly prized.
