Minted in 1793
The flowing hair large cent, or the chain cent is America's very first large cent that was officially produced by the newly created United States Mint.
The chain cent was struck only for one year, 1793.
There are two types of flowing hair large cents that were struck in the year 1793, the chain reverse and the wreath reverse.
The first of the two---the chain cent---obverse design features an image of Liberty with her hair flowing back, beneath her the date, and above her the word LIBERTY.
The reverse of the coin shows a chain with 15 links, which represented the 15 states that existed at the time. The outer edge of the coin holds the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
The wreath cent's reverse shows a wreath encircling the words ONE CENT with the fraction 1/100 beneath it and the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA along the outer edge of the coin.
There are a couple varieties of this first chain cent. The first chain cents that were produced originally only said UNITED STATES OF AMERI because the engraver did not leave enough room on the die to finish the inscription.
