Capped Bust Dime Value Guide

Minted from 1809-1837

The Capped Bust Dime was minted from 1809 to 1837, with a design created by John Reich, an engraver at the U.S. Mint. The obverse features a portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, while the reverse depicts a bald eagle with a shield on its chest, clutching arrows and an olive branch. The Capped Bust Dime is appreciated for its beautiful design and historical importance.

During its mintage, the Capped Bust Dime underwent a design modification in 1828, transitioning from a large diameter to a reduced diameter format. This change resulted in two distinct subtypes for collectors to pursue.

The large diameter coins are scarcer and more valuable, particularly the 1822 issue. The Capped Bust Dime series offers collectors an opportunity to assemble a complete set of dates and mint marks, although some issues, like the 1829 Curl Base 2 and the 1838-O, are considered rare and highly prized.
